Medication changes for teens with ADHD and ODD, When do you change there medications?
Q: My teen son sees his doctor every 3 months for medication. (15 min appt) When I asked when or if my son needed his meds changed he said after puberty he may need a little change. He sees him in a week. But in the last 3 months my son seems to be regressing. His school work is slipping, he seems more angery then ever, his writing skills now look like they did 4 years ago.If he doesnt recomend med changes , what else would he suggest? If you have a teen with ADHD please give me a hint. His doctor is very good.... one of the top in the state, but he has a huge case load and my son seems to be just one of the crowd.I just want to be prepared with ideas when we go in to see him.Thank youanswer :My son just turned 16. And i was told he may never be off his meds. This was stated last year. Also, when he writes a report he writes it with no space between any word. If he does a report on the computer it seems to be better. He has more complete thoughts. This seems strange to me because I do much better on paper. Also can his meds slow his puberty down? I have not seen that anywhere I was just wondering if anyone had read that anywhere. Thanks
A: Weight increase can also make a difference, and sometimes over time a particular medication just isn't as effective. My son used straterra for a long time as a teen with great success. My son also had mood issues and needed a medication for his moods. Interestingly, that only started with pre-puberty (around 11 or 12 years of age). Before that they just said it was ADHD, although I always knew it was something more. Also ADHD kids are often dyslexic. If his writing is an issue, then I would have him tested for Learning Disabilities. He may need some help there. I would be concerned about them calling it "ODD". That is a pretty negative label - geez I can't imagine what that would do to the poor kids self esteem - not to mention other ramifications as he becomes an adult. Our kids have enough challenges! Could it be bipolar? The symptoms can be very similar. A new doctor might be able to "rediagnose" him if needed. If you don't get a good feel for your doctor then look around for another. He may be right on target - or maybe he is isn't. Remember - you are the customer. You decide if you want to see another doctor, or just get a second opinion. Also I would research medications & know something about them. That way you can ask good questions and make possible recommendations & see what he thinks of them. I was the one who suggested straterra for my son...
I have some psychological problems that seem undiagnosable, help?
Q: I've researched on the internet as well as visited several psychologists. These problems I've been having have been interfering in my life in almost every way. It's affecting my grades, my relationships with friends and family, my relationship with my boyfriend, and even my walk with God.I'm only 16.No one seems to know what's wrong or what I can do to help. This is a very personal issue, and I wouldn't post on here if I weren't disparate. There are so many problems, I can't even state them all, but I will try. I'll also answer any questions about any further symptoms or anything else. I often go into "freak outs" as I call them. Here are a few "freak outs" so you can see what they entail:Once I began sobbing, punched holes in my wall, so big that my biggest poster couldn't cover them, and that was with a single punch. I sobbed and screamed (shrieked is more like it) for hours, rocking back and forth, telling my mom and psychologist to "f*** off" It felt like I was possessed, in a way, but I was fully consciouss of my actions.Another time I did the same things, punching my car seat until my knuckles were very bloody, they are still extremely sore and red, swollen and still bleed and its been about a week.Once I drove away from my home, hours away, and wouldn't reveal where I was. Once I left my house in bare feet, screaming and crying, in the middle of a huge snow, and tried to run off into the forest, almost getting frost bite.Etc. Etc. Etc.I also feel as if personalities are switching on and off in my head. It's exactly like DID(Disassociate Identity Disorder) as described by Wiki, but without memory loss. Each personality has a distinct set of likes and dislikes, a general disposition and everything a normal personality has. I'll try and name some if anyone wants me to, just let me know.On top of this I have diagnosed ADHD and OCD, not good in combination. My meds for ADHD give me terrible side effects such as loss ofappetitee, medication induced insomnia, and severe introversion among a few other things.More over, I'm having some strange issues with my boyfriend too(please read my other question if you think you could help with that). All in all, it's too much to handle, I need help, but I don't know where to find it.Thank you for listening...Mia...<3No one has given me a diagnosis, besides ADHD and OCD, they seem to always council me to try and find a proper diagnosis. But so far no one has even got a theory. And I do know I don't have DID, the point of that is the memory loss, it's just a simple way to describe my symptoms because they truly are just like DID but I retain my memory.I should have said that I have a psychiatrist I go to regularly, and have tried many psychologists, but none have given me much help. I also am having some heart problems with tachycardia and the like, which doesn't help stress levels which normally set off some of the bizarre episodes.
A: Hi Mia,If it were me dear, I would do several things:1) I would talk to my church's pastoral staff about my emotional struggles. Assuming you are going to a Spirit-filled church, they should pray with you and seek the Lord on your behalf to help with ministry, deliverance, wisdom, overcoming past hurts, etc. If your church does not have a deliverance ministry, I would talk to a Pentecostal pastor in your area to point you to someone to see.2) Depending on what your pastors recommend, etc. you may need to see a psychiatrist, as they are better equipped than psychologists to diagnose and treat complex emotional disorders. Besides medications, appropriate cognitive therapy will probably make a big difference over time.3) I would get a full physical including blood workup to check for gland disorders, blood sugar problems, etc. I would try a hypoglycemic diet for a month to see if that helps a lot. I would see a nutritionist to get you on a healthy diet to help with hormone control, etc. and to make sure you are getting enough nutrients to support good mental and physical health.4) Continue to pray and seek the Lord for His direction on your healing and strengthening. He will guide your heart through the process as you depend on Him.God Bless!
what do you say when they give you the 'aaw...your child has ADHD' pity speech?
Q: my sons both have ADHD. but i never broadcast this as i don't want that to be an excuse for their behavior. i still see them as normal, so i treat them normal. but when people get wind of this, they give me the 'i'm so sorry for you' speech, or worse, glare at my boys like they have the plague!has that ever happened to you? what do you say to them?so true, Timid Women. one of the reasons why i don't broadcast my sons' label (thanks to their overzealous child psychologist) is because i do know they're normal. but when you get the label, it goes around. and i just get so annoyed when people make a big deal out of it. they never did when they didn't know about it!and for your info, Swamp, my kids are not taking medication! who mentioned drugs anyway???
A: Oh trust me your kids ARE normal. Even in med school my professor didn't even buy into the ADHD or ADD bull they tried to feed us. it really is just a moneymaker for pharmaceutical companies. Although it is real, kids these days are overly diagnosed. You're kids are normal don't let others treat them like they're not.
