- Q: Last year I went through a dramatic experience when I became extremely depressed and suicidal and was cutting my wrists. This was when I first stared having anxiety attacks. I eventually went to a therapist and received help. But I still have anxiety attacks and when I have them I take benedryl to calm myself down or sometimes go to sleep. Should I stop this Habit?
- A: The first thing my doctor told me about getting sleep and calming down was to try Dypenhydramine (Benadryl, Tylenol PM, Generic Sleep aids and antihistamines). It has notably fewer side effects than other prescribed medications and is not habit forming. If Benadryl helps, then you should be fine taking it. Many people take it daily for allergies. Some people may experience agitation; naturally those people should not take it.I have taken all sorts of medication for anxiety. Benadryl does not help when I do have anxiety incidents. If it works for you, I would say that you are extremely lucky. If you notice that you are experiencing the following as a result of your condition SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY: suicidal thoughts, confusion, amnesia, tightness of chest, shortness of breath (kind of like hyperventilating, an extreme symptom of anxiety). Insomnia lasting more than 5 days.If you have the previous symptoms, there are medications that your doctor can give you to help.

- What can I do during an Anxiety Attack to calm down?
- Q: I thought I was having a heart attack yesterday and I went to the emergency room. The doctor simply said it was an anxiety attack and it was caused from stress, depression, and worry. I also drank coffee yesterday and he said the caffiene didn't help. So he gave me some medicine to calm down. I had another anxiety attack today and im guessing its from lack of sleep. Thats what my doctor said I wasn't getting enough sleep to. But when I have these attacks. How do I make them go away? I really need to know. I'm only 17 and Im going through a really tough time with family problems and its effecting me so bad to where im having heart problems and I get startled easily. Please tell me how to get rid of these anxiety attacks when they happen. Because it gets so bad actually that I have near heart attacks and they don't go away. I also keep losing weight because of them and my appetite just shuts down. Its hard to eat to when I feel this way.I just experienced an axiety attack that lasted 2 hours just now. My heart is slower now and I feel a little better. I drank warm milk also. What would you recommend doing as well? I'm also going to see the doctor again tomorrow for some medication incase it happens again. This feeling is even worse than having the flue. The anxiety attack feeling is horrible. im under soo much stress. I'm only 17 years old. I have a healthy diet and get enough viatamins. So that has nothing to do with it.I also have extreamly dark circles under my eyes. So my doctor was convinced that I was using speed when I went into the emergency room yesterday. Which i wasn't.. I just had a mild heart attack from stress.
- A: Hey man, I feel your pain. I used to get them bad. What helped me was coldness...sticking my hands in ice water helps and cold drinks (sounds weird). Deep breaths...Classical music (Beethoven and Mozart are good), sometimes a hot facecloth on your face is nice too. Lack of sleep was also a major cause for me. I'd see your doctor and mention that. If you are not on prescription medication and your doctor is fine with it, I find Tylenol PM helps quite a bit with sleeping (it's over the counter so regular pediatricians are more likely to give that a try, rather than give you medications like Trazidone or Seroquel). And a major thing I had to do was lay off the caffeine...soda and coffee were the majors for me. Email me at AGLTROPLB@yahoo.com if you have any questions, I'd love to help and I've been through a lot of what you're describing.
