- what causes down syndrome? my aunt had it, is there any chance of my bebe getting it?
- Q: is it genetic, or what?the first time i was pregnant i had a dream that my bebe had it,and like a week later i misscarried.
- A: It is a genetic disorder....since you have family members with it....your Dr will probably advise you to have the Quad Screen (it checks for a higher probability for your child having it). Or maybe even an amnio to see if your child has the trait. BUT that doesn't mean that any child you should carry would automatically get it. Taking prenatal vitamins BEFORE getting pregnant will help in protecting your child from a lot of neural tube defects. As for your first miscarriage...anything before the 2nd trimester is usually unexplained. After that it's considered a problem with the baby. (i.e. a chromosonal defect etc) If the baby is lost and then examined...they can tell you whether or not it was a chromosonal problem. (even then it might not be). Your dream could have meant that subconsciously you knew something was wrong with the pregnancy...or it simply could have been a coincidence. There's no way to know IF you would have a child with Down's .....but every woman has a chance of it. You can speak to a geneticist...they can tell you exactly what your chances are...and what (if anything) you can do to lower your chances. Good luck and I'm sorry for your loss...I've experienced miscarriages...and it's never easy.
