- Why do my cat and dog seem to be just as comfortable lying on the concrete floor as on soft pillows?
- Q: What is it in their anatomy that makes this so? Do they notice any difference at all?
- A: It really isn't so much the anatomy of the creature that makes it not really care where it sleeps. Instead it is the body weight. Most large dogs will tend to stay away from concrete, ect, but will still lay on it.Compared to huamsn, who's body weight can be 10x to 3x heavier than pets, animals really don't need to have so much cushioning.Humans, because of our body weight, and the way that our body is situated (ie, skeletal is in a verticle format), we prefer cushioning because we want to soften our comfort level when laying on hard surfaces.Dogs, cats, ect, don't really care because they simply don't exert the same amount of force while laying on the ground/hard surfaces as do humans. Humans, because of our skeletal alignment, usualy exert quite a bit of force on point zones on our body; these usualy are the head, shoulder, scapulla, hips, center of the back, ankle, and usualy knees. As you can see there are quite a few regions of our body that we want cushioning for, as it makes it uncomfortable for us to lay down.Cats and dogs, on the other hand, usualy present a solid line, or a straight alignment while sleeping, there isn't much of a pressure or point zone to rely on, as they don't have many of their mass directly pressuring the ground underneath. For example, when a cat lays on it's side, it is only exerting force from the tips of it's paws, to that of it's head, that is drastically different than a human, who can extert at least 6 or more pressure zones while laying on their side.Notice the difference?
