How to fix a leaking bathroom faucet?
Q: Maybe I shouldn't attempt this... any advice would be appreciated. I have a faucet that constantly runs... not leaks, but actually runs (not full blast, but significantly). It stops when I turn off the hot water under the sink. No problem with the cold water. Right now the cold water is on under the sink and there is no dripping or running when the tap is turned off. The faucet has one handle for both hot and cold. Is this something I can fix or do I have to get a plumber? I am a mom with limited tools and absolutely no experience with plumbing.
A: good question, and lots of detail!! since you have shut offs under the sink, you might be able to tackle this job yourself. at the least, you can visit the hardware or home center near you and find out what it will take to do the job, and go from there. what has happened is the o ring on the hot water side of the faucet has worn out. it's best to replace the whole cartridge ( insides, or guts of the faucet), so it will work like new again when you are done. and for a lot less work and money than a new faucet.you will need to write down the brand and hopefully the model # of the faucet and take that with you to get the right replacement part. usually the brand name is prominently placed so that should be easy to find, the model # if it's on it, will likely be on the back side toward the wall, at the base of the faucet. if it's not there, check the underside of the nozzle. you may need a mirror to see it in either of these spots, and you might have to clean off soap or hard water residue to see it, too. when you get the replacement part, make sure that you have the tools required to do the repair, too. you'll likely need; a pair of channel lock pliers, and adjustable wrench, a screwdriver with both a flat and phillips head, and or an allen wrench set. don't worry, even buying all of them will be cheaper than a plumber, LOL!!when you go to make the repair, 1st shut off the water under the sink. next, close the drain and lay a wash cloth in the sink in case you drop any small parts, so they won't fall down the drain. the next thing is to remove the handle, using either the screwdriver or allen wrenchs, depending on which is holding it on, a screw, or an allen screw (it has a 6 sided hole in it). then you'll probably need to use the channel locking pliers to unscrew the the cover that holds the cartridge in the faucet, turning the nut countrer clockwise (just remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey. that's looking down from above it). the instructions will cover all of the steps you will have to do to remove the old part better than i could. so, the only other thing i can warn you about is, be very carefull when you go to screw the cover back on to the faucet, or the screws, too, for that matter. sometimes it is better to turn the piece that is going to be screwed together, backwards to make sure it sets down squarely (if you do it carefully, you'll be able to feel it click as the threads slip past the start of each other), then slowly turn it to the right by hand until it starts to screw together. if it feels like it has started, and isn't getting too tight, or binding up, then you can finish tightening it with the wrench. i say this because you don't want to start the threads crooked and stripe them by cross threading them, if that happens, then you'll have to replace the whole faucet. good luck, hope this helps you get it fixed, and don't be afraid to ask all the questions you have, when you when you get the part. it's their job to help you do the job right. good luck, car dude. p.s. if you decide to replace it, buy a Moen brand faucet, they are the best ones out there. Moen doesn't change the inner parts all of the time so that you not only need a model #, but the serial # too, to get the correct replacement parts! even their "cheap" faucets are better than some of the fancy brands best ones! rick.
