I might be wrong on this, but I am pretty sure that any seed that is kept at the wholesalers place for more than 9 months must be retested before they can sell it to the retailers. I also believe the big box stores like Lowes and Homedepot ...

Did my grass seed expire?
Q: I purchased 2 bags of Scotts PurePremium grass seed last July containing various bluegrasses, ryegrasses, and fescues. One bag says that it was tested in December 2006 and the other January 2007. I planted these seeds last September and they germinated very well. Then over a week ago I planted more seeds to fill in some bare spots and not a single seed has sprouted. I watered regularly once a day, used seeding soil, and the temperatures were in the 60s during the day and 40s at night. Is the temperature too cold, did the grass seed expire, did I not water enough, should I buy new seeds?
A: nope, the seed is still ok. read on the back of the bag of seed it says " seeds will germinate best when temp are around 60-70s. so you plant the seed now, it will merge in early summer, that is what i had read from the back side of the grass bag. plus, seed will last for a long time, at least 2-3 years, so you are ok^^
i was wondering if grass seed expires after a certain amount of time?
Q:
A: Actually it depends on the type of grass seed in question... All plants have seed dormancy periods that determine how long the seed can be viable... these are based on factors like environment, plant family and species, habit of growth (annual vs. perennial) etc..... 5-10 years is a good rule of thumb (although some weed seeds can stay dormant in the ground for over 100 years) personally I have seeded a animal pasture with Orchardgrass seed that was 8 years old and it still came up with an 70% germination rate. Just keep in mind that as the seed ages the germination rate will decrease no matter what.
