- A: In about 10 to 21 days, the stump will dry up and drop off, leaving a small wound that may take a few days to heal. Until then, be sure to keep the area dry and you can wipe around the umbilical cord with an alcohol pad. It should be fine, but call your doctor if you notice are large amount of bleeding (small amounts are ok), or if the area seems red and inflammed b/c it could be infected.Congrats on the new baby! =)

- Q: my baby is 7 weeks old. he was born 4 weeks early, not sure if that matters, but still has his cord attached. it looks like its getting looser like its gonna fall off soon but it seems like its taking too long. i clean it with alcohol every diaper change. is there a problem?
- A: They should normally fall off at about 10 days (although my son was 4 days which surprised me a bit - it never got loose, but one nappy change it had just come off). I think the alcohol is what is delaying it coming off - this is toughening the skin up and stopping it from falling off - cotton wool and water is all you need to use, unless it looks infected, in which case see your doctor. Quit using the alcohol and hopefully it should come off pretty quickly. Congrats on your new arrival.

You can pull it up some and get in there to clean. Fold down the top of the diapers also to allow air flow. If it doesn't come off by your child's 2 week appointment, I would suggest to your Dr. about a solution that can be applied to it in the Dr.s office, that will aid in it drying.
